End of 2017 Thoughts…

End of 2017 Thoughts…

As 2017 draws to a close I can’t believe that this year is already over – it’s gone SO fast!!! It feels like just a couple of months ago that we were bringing in the new year and it’s already time to do it again. I started off the year planning to stay in Australia until the end of September and then probably go home to England. However around the start of 2017 I realised that I had fallen in love with Australia, and that I wanted more time to see more of the country, so I decided to extend my visa for another year. I’m very conscious of not making the most of my time here and I worried that I’d wasted the last year here. But on reflection I realised that I have actually done quite a lot in this fast year…

  • I┬áspent time in the beautiful Tasmania
  • I gained a new regular freelance client as well as a few sporadic clients
  • I spent 3 months living and working at a 5 star resort in the Whitsundays, something totally new for me
  • I visited the beautiful Whitehaven beach
  • I went snorkelling for the first time (in the Whitsundays)
  • I saw humpback whales in the wild
  • I also saw plenty of turtles and rays super close up from a kayak
  • I did a road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, living in a camper van for 2 weeks (another first for me)
  • This included seeing the beautiful east Coast of Aus including stunning places such as the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Nimbin, the Blue Mountains, Phillip Island and more
  • I started a new job working in a bar by the beach

Overall this whirlwind of a year was filled with adventure and new experiences. So I turn my attention to what I wand from 2018. I want to ensure that I’m doing the things I want to do rather than doing things for someone else. I have two main passions in life which has led to my two new years goals:

  1. Write more
  2. Travel more

The first will involve both gaining new freelance clients, or applying for the ideal copywriting job, as well as blogging more for myself. The second will involve travelling within Australia and further afield, although this year it is an absolute priority for me to spend Christmas at home, after spending the last two in Australia. I already have one holiday booked when Conor’s family come to visit us in Aus – we’re spending two weeks visiting Cairns, Port Douglas, Sydney and Uluru, which I can’t wait for. It will be a little different to our usual travelling as of course the parents have a higher budget. Despite the fact that I want to save up to enjoy this fully, I also would love to do a Great Ocean Road trip in January or February. It’s unacceptable to live in Melbourne for 2 years and not drive this beautiful, scenic road. My sister and her partner will be in Thailand at the end of March so I would love to go and visit them, both to see my sister for the first time in a while, and to experience the country I have heard so much about.

This year I want to focus on my goals. This is the year of me. We also have to figure out what we’ll do when our Australia visa ends in September – will we try to stay for longer, move on to another country or go home? Difficult decisions lie ahead…

Watch this space to see how my goals pan out, and good luck with your new years goals. Happy New Year!
